This place is unexplainable. For many reasons. Primarily, it falls into too many categories. The vegetation here is UNBELIEVABLE. When Dubrovnik was first inhabited (Mid-evil times!!) explorers from all around the world used this port. It was controlled by the Venetians used it primarily as a stopping point for their imports from South America and Africa. When you look on the bluff and see an orange tree next to a cactus next to an oak next to a conifer next to a PALM TREE, you look, double take, and wait. Is this REAL??
Yah, yah it is.
It's a city. In a JUNGLE. The whole area of Dubrovnik (Dalmatia) is covered with mountains. They cascade down the entire coast and into different islands. So the city is built on a mountain... in a jungle.
Even though Dubrovnik's walls are preserved, and its so perfectly intact that its protected by UNESCO.. the whole place is bursting with newness. Immediately outside of the walls, houses cannot be put up fast enough. It seems as though everyone is whispering in everyone else's ear "Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik". This place is... undefinable.
Yesterday we left a little after 8 a.m. and stayed outside the entire day until 6 p.m...here are a couple wild shots!
This would be wild Erik in the middle of the Adriatic.. For anyone wondering, it's about as cold as Lake Michigan in October... not quite for swimming, but nothing to a Wisconsinite!
I walked the plank!
And of course.... we splurged... and got PEANUT BUTTER!!! WOOHHOO!!
